These were some of the interesting thoughts from our outstanding economics lecturer. Thought i should share over here.
Exploration - When tsunami's struck in SL the severe damage caused the construction industry to boom. Construction business kicked off and people were benefitted. This is when exploration take place.
Exploitation - When tsunami's struck there were lots of donors from around the world offering funds to help us. But if those funds were actually received they could have developed those areas to a status than they were before. Those funds were not been effectively utilised to their actual purpose. That's when exploitation took place.
Exploration actually contribute to the development where as exploitation burys it.
Even though the two words sounds like same, they actually meant contradictory, which is quite facinating.

Well, the 2 words have a vast difference in meaning...and the lecturer has revealed it in a perfect way which totally applies to our context...:-)

What he have said is very true. The trunami was the worst event which we faced but at the same time a bless in disguise as some call it. But our infrastucture was not solid enough to gain from it. But the humaniny was strong enough to bare it and help when wanted.

What your lecturer told is very true. Most of the tsunami reconstruction funds channeled to Sri Lanka was exploited by so called NGO's. I have witnessed it by my self in eastern Sri Lanka. Driving expensive 4x4's and spending weekend in 5 start hotels in Habarana or Arugam Bay. Thats all what they did except for projects funded by US and Japanese governments.
Commenting on the word both Exploration and Exploitation leads to a common word "OPPORTUNITY". Both construction industry and those at NGO's had many opportunities.
I guess that's why sri lanka is circling around the same place. We were not lucky enough to be benefitted from the 'opportunity' that brought us the sympathy of the world.
Is it wise enough to let every thing to be handle by luck? In this context money was their's so they spend it the way they wanted. But the government was responsible for proper regulation of NGO's. Then again they had all the backing from this so called international community, where some of our people worship. I might sound bit radical, but if those funds were properly utilized eastern Sri Lanka could have been the most developed areas in our country.
I think as sri lankans we not lucky, not that it's actually due to the unluck that made the situ like this, its mainly the poor management from our government.
And I don't think it's rather radical to have such a view but more or less a fact that could have been realised.
